Eurojackpot Hits €90 Million Cap for First Time This Year
The top prize in Eurojackpot has climbed to its maximum value of €90 million after a seventh consecutive draw came and went without a winner on Friday 3rd May. It is the first time the jackpot cap has been hit since November 2018.
There have already been a couple of big winners this year. A player from the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate pocketed €63 million on 8th February, before a ticket holder from Sweden broke their country’s national record with a €53 million (561 million kr) win on 5th March.
The current prize is as large as anything the game has ever produced, after no tickets matched the full winning line in the most recent draw last Friday. One player from Italy won €2.7 million in the Match 5 + 1 tier, and over 1.3 million prizes were given away altogether.
How the Jackpot Cap Works
Now the jackpot cap is in place, the top prize cannot go any higher than €90 million. However, there is no limit to how long it can stay at this level. In the summer of 2018, the jackpot stood at €90 million for seven draws until two German participants split the money.
The most exciting feature of the jackpot cap for players is that funds which would normally go to the top prize are instead given to the second tier. It is therefore possible to win a share of more than €10 million or even €20 million just by matching five main numbers and one Euro number.
The odds of winning in the Match 5 + 1 category are 1 in 5,959,013 - around 19 times better than the odds of winning the jackpot.
Big Winners
The jackpot has reached €90 million on several occasions since the game was launched in 2012. It did not happen for a while though, and the first big winner came in May 2015 when a player from the Czech Republic snared the top prize.
Most of the big prizes since then have gone to German winners, although a syndicate of four players from Loimaa in Finland also won €90 million in February 2018.

Even if you don’t land the jackpot or the enhanced second prize, there are a total of 12 ways to win in Eurojackpot. You just have to match two main numbers and one Euro number, or one main number and two Euro numbers, to receive a payout.
